Mike Jones vs. Jesus Soto-Karass: Will Jones stink up the joint again?

By Dan Ambrose: Number #2 ranked WBO welterweight contender Mike Jones (23-0, 18 KO’s) will get a second shot at #15 ranked Jesus Soto-Karass (24-5-3, 16 KO’s) in a 12 round bout on February 19th on the undercard of the Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire bout at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The last time Jones, 27, and Soto-Karass, 28, fought, Jones got a questionable 10 round majority decision in November 2010. It’s hard to see how Jones deserved to get the win because he punched himself out after the first two rounds and was in vapor luck for the final eight rounds.

I’ve seen fighters punch themselves out before, but I’ve never seen one punch themselves out the way that Jones did. He not only got tired after trying to knock Soto-Karass out in the first two rounds, but he stayed tired for the remainder of the fight without ever getting second wind. It was like watching a body builder get pumped up and then be useless for the rest of the fight. Jones looked slow and tight, like someone that was recruited from a weight lifting gym to try his hand at boxing.

No way did Jones deserve to win that fight, and I have no understanding of how or why Jones is ranked at number #2 in the WBO, when you look at all the soft opponents that Jones has beaten to get that ranking. He just doesn’t look like a good fighter at all, and it doesn’t matter that he’s 23-0, the guy is rigid as a stiff, lacks flexibility and fights like someone that was taught how to paint by the numbers. Soto-Karass should easily win this one unless the judges get things twisted give it to Jones again.
