By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s next opponent for April 16th will be announced soon according to Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. They have several fighters that they’re looking at right now but won’t say which one until perhaps next week.

According to Dan Rafael, the fighters under consideration are Lucas Matthysse, Breidis Prescott, John Murray and Robert Guerrero. Lamont Peterson is still reportedly one of the fighters being considered, even though Khan said that Peterson had priced himself out by asking too much money to fight him.

If Khan want’s to impress and win new boxing fans, he would be do well to take on someone that boxing fans would be interested in seeing him fight like Prescott or Matthysse. Khan was knocked out by Prescott in 2008, and there are still a great deal of boxing fans that would like to see Khan at least try and avenge the loss.

It always seems strange when you have a fighter that was wiped out as badly as Khan was not trying to avenge the defeat and just making excuses about why he’s not willing to face Prescott. It would be a fight that would be pure fireworks because Prescott is a pure knockout puncher and he loads up with everything he throws.

The Peterson, Murray and Guerrero fights would be much less interesting as those guys don’t have a big fan base and it would seem more like the careful match-making that Khan has been known for since his loss to Prescott. Guerrero is a super featherweight and that would be kind of sad to see Khan matched against that guy.

Peterson arguably was beaten in his last fight against Victor Ortiz, so it’s hard to find any reason to reward him by matching him against Khan. The Ortiz-Peterson fight ended in a 10 round draw, but Peterson was beaten none the less. He was knocked down twice, bloodied and battered by Ortiz. HBO had Ortiz winning the fight, as did I. Peterson would be another case of Khan being put in with a soft opponent. Since Khan has been matched against nothing but soft opponents, with the exception of Marcos Maidana, since 2008, I don’t see any point in having Khan get another soft opponent just because he was able to survive his recent fight with Maidana last month.
