If Pacquiao unified the welterweight division would he still be criticized?

By Gerardo Granados: Boxer greatness can be measured by different ways not only but the amount of belts a boxer has collected or the number of divisions in which he has conquered titles.

By any means the most valuable way to rank the greatness of a fighter is to be able to remember him as a warrior inside the ring besides if his general boxing skills are superb or not. A prizefighter that unifies a weight division will mark his name in boxing history, just like Sugar Ray Leonard, Donald Curry, Cory Spinks or Zab Judah did it in the past. If Pacman could do it fighting the way he used to do in the lower divisions it would separate him from the rest.

Boxing fans around the world like good fights and Pacman can deliver good ones. Problem is that he is been pressured to fight against bigger opponents, but he doesn’t have to fight against a middleweight champion, all he need to do is to dominate his weight division (in which he is a small welter that climbed from flyweight); sound arrogant to say that he can unify the welterweight division, but he does, have the reader noticed who are the other welterweight belt holders?

If Pacman accomplished this feat, then critics would say that the other title holders that he defeat were not great boxers or else, but they could not say that they were old past their prime, shot or damaged goods. Either way some would not be satisfied but others would like to see Pacman try to unify, even more if he did it fighting with the courage and the wild boxing style that he owns.

Both WBA Viacheslav Senchenko (age 33 / T31-W31 (20)-L0-D0) and IBF Jan Zaveck (age 34 / T32-W30 (17)-L1 (0)-D0) are tailor made for Pacquiao to beat them, I´ll pick Pacman by late KO against both. WBC Andre Berto (age 27 / T27-W27(21)-L0D0) has not fight against top competition yet but he has enough power to finish a fight so he has better chances against Manny but not big chances, his defense is not really good and he has never engage against a rival with such power, speed and mobility as Manny has. The IBO belt is vacant but I guess the promoters would be able to sign a very good rival to dispute this title. Pacquiao critics would state that these champions aren’t really good, but still they are the reigning “champions” available in the division.

It would not be hard for Pacman to challenge these champions because all of them would love to have a chance to battle against the boxing phenomenon and Pacquiao would be able to set all the conditions in the contract.

Problem is that these fights (WBA Senchenko – IBF Zaveck – WBC Berto – IBO) might not represent high PPV sales, but I bet that with the right promotion they would sell pretty well.

If Pacman unified the welterweight division he would increase his incredibly legacy, but does critics would recognize his merit? I believe neither Senchenko, Zaveck or Berto would be able to unify the welterweight division, between them the boxing skill are quite similar and all belong to the same level of quality as prizefighters.

The stronger argument of his critics would be that at the end what would Pacman prove if he demonstrates that he is the best welterweight by defeating the current champions, if the other great welter is not around?
