Devon Alexander wants Juan Manuel Marquez, says it’s “More important” than Khan fight

By Eric Thomas: WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KO’s) has a fight coming up on 1/29 against WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KO’s). However, the 23-year-old Alexander is already looking past Bradley, saying he wants to fight WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO’s). Alexander sees a fight with the 37-year-old Marquez as a bigger fight than one against WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan.

It would depend on where the fight takes place. If it’s the U.S, then an Alexander vs. Marquez fight would clearly be bigger than Alexander vs. Khan, because Khan has few fans in America because he’s only fought there twice and didn’t look impressive by American standards in his win against Marcos Maidana recently.

In an article at Univision, Alexander said “Marquez wants to move up to 140 lbs. A fight with him would be better and more imporant than one with Khan. Khan is a good boxer, but he is no big thing.”

Khan isn’t a warrior like Marquez, that’s for sure. Khan was running from Maidana all fight long and clinching and holding the arm and neck of Maidana once he was hurt. Marquez would never resort to such tactics in his fights. He doesn’t hold and he would never run from one of his opponents. Marquez comes to fight and running around the ring all night long and sprinkling in flurries to try and steal rounds isn’t something that Marquez would ever do. Khan is popular because of his hand speed, not because of anything he’s actually accomplished. Khan still hasn’t beaten anyone other than a washed up Paulie Malignaggi and his narrow win over Maidana.
