By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) may have defeated Devon Alexander last Saturday night to capture Alexander’s WBC strap, but Bradley only proved that he’s better than the twenty-three year old Alexander and not better than WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan or the other top contenders in the light welterweight division.
Bradley said this today “I said throughout fight week and after the fight, I am done calling people out. I am the people’s champion.” I think Bradley needs to step back and take a look at what boxing fans are saying about him after seeing how bad he looked against Alexander.
I don’t know of many boxing fans that are seeing Bradley as the people’s champion. He looked weak against Alexander and his speed isn’t all that great either. Bradley would be lucky if he were to lose by a lopsided decision against Khan, because Bradley is just too small to compete against the better fighters from what I can see of him.
Bradley’s wins over Lamont Peterson, Alexander, Miguel Vazquez and Junior Witter were good wins, but none of those guys are particularly big and powerful fighters. Bradley really hasn’t picked up the kind of win that would suggest that he’s got the talent to be the best fighter in the division.
I know Bob Arum is high on Bradley, but I think he’s backing a losing horse if he thinks Bradley can beat Khan, Lucas Matthysse or Marcos Maidana. Those guys look a cut or two above Bradley right now, and I can see some people wondering what they ever saw in Bradley after Khan get through with him.
