By Lewis Croft: This Saturday at the Silverdome, Michigan we will witness the eagerly awaited Light-Welterweight unification bout between Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KO’s) and Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KO’s) . Both WBC and WBO titles will be on the line to help decide who is the best 140 lb in the world. Awaiting the winner is WBA champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s). Recently out-boxing hard hitting Argentine Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s), he looks set to fight the winner of this bout in the later part of 2011.
Devon Alexander looked good in stopping tough Colombian Juan Urango (22-3, 17 KO’s) with a beautifully timed uppercut but failed to impress in handling former champion Andreas Kotelnik (31-4, 13 KO’s) in his last outing. On the other hand Timothy Bradley outclassed previously unbeaten Lamont Peterson (28-1-1, 14 KO’s) with a good display of technical boxing. Bradley only managed one fight in 2010 against welterweight Luis Carlos Abregu (29-1, 23 KO’s) after a potential bout with Marcos Maidana was postponed due to a back injury. Credit needs to be given to both men in a time where many fighters and promoters will be over protective of there ‘0’. Both will try to lay claim as being number 1 in the division.
I expect this to be an exciting fight, two young undefeated champions lock horns in a tantalizing contest. Look for the opening rounds to be cautious but with Devon Alexander looking for the big shot early. Alexander will probably throw more punches and have a higher work rate but Bradley will land the cleaner more crisper shots. By the middle rounds Bradley will begin to establish his superior boxing skills and take the centre of the ring with his jab. Expect a late rally by Alexander trying to land his big shots but will not be enough to take the decision. I see Bradley taking this contest by a unanimous decision.
This will not be a bad thing for Alexander in the long run , who at 23 is learning his trade at a steady pace. Defeat can bring the best out of a fighter and can learn more in defeat than many wins. I eagerly await this contest and will look forward to seeing the winner get a shot at Amir Khan.
