Would Pacquiao losing to Mosley help boxing?

Image: Would Pacquiao losing to Mosley help boxing?By Allen Hmiel: Manny Pacquiao great as he is and all he has accomplished in boxing is also setting a trend which is draining the sport of true champions and real challengers. Without a defined World Boxing Commission to oversee Boxing and make reasonable match ups fighters such as Pacquiao seem to be hand picking opponents that fit their style and are not really a competitive challenge to their championship title belts.

Pacquiao fighting an old Oscar De La Hoya, David Diaz, an over matched Ricky Hatton, a fill in Joshua Clottey, a battered Miguel Cotto and a much rested and willing opponent Antonio Margarito doesn’t seem like a championship line-up of challengers more than a hand picked list of easy wins and huge paydays. Now Shane Mosley comes onto the horizon as 39-year-old fighter handpicked specifically after losing overwhelmingly to the fast fists of Floyd Mayweather. Why not fight Andre Berto or Timothy Bradley or Amir Khan? How about challenging Martinez for his belt?

Is the sport of Boxing coming to the premise of ” How long can I keep my championship by fighting beatable handpicked opponents chosen by the promoters, trainers and the fighters themselves.?” Instead of a National or Worldwide Boxing commission with real selection powers that makes decisions- boxing basically has left most of the match making up to promoters and the fighters. Is Manny Pacquiao really great or is he just been fighting fighters tailored as easy marks to fit his style and depleted of enough skills to be an easy win? Have boxing fans been deceived into believing Pacquiao is great? Where Pacquiao possibly is really good, but through astute match ups and handpicked opponents suited to Pacquiao’s strengths, he is winning fights by having opponents ready to fall? As one looks at the list of Pacquiao’s last seven opponents including Mosley isn’t it apparent all seven are easy wins? Boxing is becoming more of a ‘How long can I keep my title’ rather than really a sport where the best deserving fighters are getting their fair chance at winning a championship. Pacquiao is a good fighter but is he great? Look at his record and determine for yourself if Pacquiao isn’t winning fights over opponents ready to fall? Maybe he isn’t that good? Could it be if Pacquiao loses, boxing wins?
