Witter interested in fighting Matthew Hatton

Image: Witter interested in fighting Matthew HattonBy Sean McDaniel: Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight champion Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) expressed interest in facing EBU welterweight champion Mathew Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KO’s) next. And there’s talk that the 29-year-old Hatton is interested in taking the fight. This would be the perfect time for Hatton to face Witter, because Witter is 36-years-old now, hasn’t fought in over a year since being stopped in the 8th round by Devon Alexander last year in August, and has lost two out of his last three fights.

If this wasn’t the time for a decent but severely limited fighter like Hatton to beat a crafty fighter like Witter, I don’t know when it would be. However, Witter still might be too dangerous for Hatton to fight. Witter, before his recent losses, was more than good enough to beat a guy like Craig Watson. And we saw what Watson did with Hatton in his lopsided 12 round decision victory over him in 2008.

Hatton may have improved enough since then to give him a chance against Witter, but I still can’t see him or his brother Ricky wanting this fight. Matthew is hoping to get a title shot against WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, perhaps the weakest of the welterweight champions. Hatton would be taking a big risk by taking on Witter, because if he lost he’d ruin his chance for a title shot against Senchenko. But then again, if Hatton were to fight Witter and beat him, he’d get a big assist in getting his title shot.

A Witter-Hatton fight might do well with fight fans in the UK. It would easily be Hatton’s biggest fight of his 10 year pro career. Up to now, Hatton’s biggest fight was his 12 round decision win over Yuriy Nuzhnenko this year. However, a Witter fight would surely top that fight and then some. It would be interesting to see if Hatton would be willing to take on Witter. Hatton’s brother Ricky wanted no part of Witter during his career, and some people felt that Hatton was ducking Witter. By taking on and beating Witter, it would mean a lot.
