Will Marquez get the call for Pacquiao’s next opponent?

By Dan Ambrose: With Manny Pacquiao now fighting on May 7th, the same weekend as the Mexican Cinco de Mayor celebration, it seems only logical that Pacquiao should be matched up against Juan Manuel Marquez for a third fight instead of fading star 39-year-old Shane Mosley. It’s likely that Mosley will get the fight since Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum and close adviser Michael Koncz both like the idea of Pacquiao fighting Mosley due to his better name recognition value.

It’s a situation where they might be able to squeeze out a little more pay-per-view money from fans compared to a third fight between Marquez and Pacquiao, but the cost could be that fans are forced to see yet another mismatch and dull fight involving Pacquiao. It’s been quite awhile since Pacquiao was in an interesting fight, perhaps dating all the way back to his bout with Marquez in 2008.

Since that fight, Pacquiao has been put in with David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. Not one of those fights were interesting, as they ultimately turned into one-way routes. A fight between Pacquiao and Mosley, unlike some of those fights, has the markings of a huge mismatch even before the fight takes place. At least with the Cotto, De La Hoya and Hatton fights there was a thought that those guys had a chance to beat Pacquiao.

You can’t say the same thing with Mosley. He’s just looking so bad right now with his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sergio Mora. When you have someone looking as bad as Mosley’s been looking, it’s wise to think hard before agreeing to the fight because it could end with a lot of upset fans who will have paid $55 or more to see this fight. If it’s as bad a mismatch as it appears to be, some people could feel that Pacquiao is cherry picking opponents rather than taking on more dangerous fighters like Marquez and Andre Berto.
