By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury (13-0, 9 KO’s) is looking for an opponent for his next fight in the near year for February. Although no one has been selected at this time, a good choice for the 6’9″ Fury would be unbeaten heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s), who doesn’t have a scheduled opponent right now after IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko pulled out of their recent fight due to an abdominal tear.
Fury could really help himself if he jumps on the chance of fighting Chisora and beats him. If Fury can take out the 6’1″ Chisora, Fury will get a huge push in the heavyweight rankings and would be able to make the 1st tier. Chisora would be a big test for Fury, but I can see Fury passing that test with flying colors because of his size and his excellent offensive skills.
Another good opponent for the 22-year-old Fury would be Irish boxer Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s), who has wins over guys like Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton. Rogan is getting up there in age at 39, and is the perfect opponent for Fury to rough up on the inside with uppercuts and body shots. Rogan can punch a little for six or so rounds, but he’s mostly harmless after the fight goes beyond six round as he tends to gas out quickly and permanently. Fury could basically jab Rogan from the outside for six rounds, and then go in for the kill with body shots and upper cuts in the second half of the fight when Rogan fades on cue.
Either one of these fights would be good character-building fights for Fury so that he can continue to progress as a fighter.
