Should Khan fight Katsidis?

Image: Should Khan fight Katsidis?By Jim Dower: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan and his handlers are looking for someone for him to fight in his next bout in April of next year. Thus far, light welterweight contender Lamont Peterson’s name has been floated by Khan as someone he could be facing in this fight.

However, that’s a less than appealing fight given that Peterson was easily beaten by Timothy Bradley not too long ago by a lopsided 12 round decision. And recently, Peterson was battered by Victor Ortiz in a 12 round draw between the two fighters.

If Khan is looking to impress his British fans, Peterson might not be the one to be fighting in April. One fighter that Khan and Golden Boy Promotions might consider fighting is lightweight Michael Katsidis, whose manager/trainer recently said was interested in fighting Khan.

Katsidis isn’t a light welterweight but he does give Khan the name that he might be looking for if he wants to bring in big numbers in the UK. It would be the equivalent of Khan fighting Paulie Malignaggi, a fighter that had no chance of beating Khan and was merely a name for Khan to add to his resume.

The victory would make Khan better known to boxing fans while at the same time help him get prepared for his fight against the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander bout. Katsidis can punch fairly well, but his defense if pretty poor. He’s someone that would make it interesting for as long as the fight lasts.

It would be a great fight for Khan to showcase his hand speed, because Katsidis is someone that is slow and often stands square to his opponents. This fight would be similar to the Arturo Gatti vs. a young Oscar De La Hoya. Khan would likely rip Katsidis apart and take him out in three rounds or less.

It would be a great fight for boxing fans that want to see action fight because Katsidis would be going all out from the 1st round until the bitter end.
