Image: Mosley's power will be a problem for Pacquiao earlyBy Dan Ambrose: The 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 Ko’s) could give WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) problems for first part of their fight on May 7th, but it’s going to be tough on Mosley if he can’t find a way to get Pacquiao out of there in the first half of the fight. Mosley doesn’t have the stamina to fight a long grueling fight against Pacquiao the way he used to fight earlier in his career. Mosley runs out of gas and is forced to slow things down by clinching and holding on the inside.

Pacquiao has too much speed, too much power and too much youth for Mosley to contend with if this fight goes past the six round. Things wills steadily get worse and worse for Mosley one the 6th round has past. One thing that Mosley can try is to use the punch and grab technique that he employed in his 9th round TKO win over Antonio Margarito last year.

By getting off first with his shots and then immediately grabbing Margarito, Mosley was able to limit the punches coming back from the Mexican fighter and was able to shut him down almost entirely. Mosley was helped by the fact that he had the better hand speed and the shorter punches. He won’t have that benefit going for him in the Pacquiao bout, so he’s going to have to try and beat Pacquiao to the punch and then try to grab him to keep from getting hit. Mosley has a chance if he can clinch and slow Pacquiao down, but that’s really the only way that Mosley can with this fight unless he hurts Manny and is able to take him out early while he still has his power.
