Khan-Maidana should have been a draw

Image: Khan-Maidana should have been a drawBy Dave Lahr: After watching the Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana fight several times now and scoring each round carefully, I had no other choice but to score the fight a 12 round draw. Neither fighter did enough to win the fight, especially Khan.

While Khan did a great job in the earlier rounds, he started running out of gas after the 4th round and was throwing with a lot less energy and looking ragged. Maidana began to really put pressure on Amir after that and land more and more with each round.

Maidana was literally able to walk through Khan’s shots like they were jabs. That makes me question Khan’s power at the light welterweight level. He may been able to beat some obscure fighters like Dmitri Salita and weak punchers like Paulie Malignaggi, but he couldn’t do anything with Andriy Kotelnik and his punches didn’t make a dent against Maidana, who looked fresh at the end of the fight.

I scored rounds fight as follows: 3,6,7,10,11,12 for Maidana based on his bigger shots. Khan was able to get the better of Maidana in rounds 1,2,4,5,8,9. After the 9th, Khan was just exhausted and I felt he would have lost those rounds whether he was hurt or not. His legs were like noodles from all the running he had done.

You can only run so much before your legs give out on you. Ask Wladimir Klitschko. He ran from Ross Puritty all fight long and in the 11th Puritty took him when Wladimir had nothing left. This is Khan’s fault. He should have stood his ground and fought Maidana instead of moving so much. I think Khan would have done a lot better. But that’s the game plan that was fed to him by Freddie Roach. I don’t blame Khan for that.

There needs to be a rematch between Khan and Maidana because Khan didn’t prove anything and surely didn’t beat Maidana.
