Best defensive boxer: Mayweather or Whitaker?

By Gerardo Granados: I guess a fight between these two would not be a good match because of their styles, can you imagine both of them countering all night long? That would not be very exiting to watch, although if they had good motivation to win, that fight might have been very tactical and one fight that we could learn a few things from.

If Pernell and Floyd had fought at any weight from lightweight to super welterweight it would not be hard to pick a winner but I am sure that to determine who the only master of defensive style it might take a while to make a pick.

Neither Pernell nor Floyd had iron fists to go along with their superior defensive skills, both have good power but aren’t considered as power punchers, both are outstanding counterpunchers, Floyd is slightly faster than Pernell; Whitaker faced better opposition but Mayweather is just a little more tactical; both have good chin and have a similar body build, although Floyd is slightly bigger. Pernell engaged against better championship opposition than Floyd has. Whitaker is the 1984 lightweight Olympic Gold Medalist meanwhile Mayweather is the 1996 Bronze Medalist.

Both are extraordinary defensive boxers, their over all defensive skills are something special. Both are tactically greats and are very smart inside the ring, a bit tricky and cunning inside the ring, they also could quite easily decipher their rivals and break their rhythm.

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Perhaps the reader will prefer the one that he was able to watch in his prime. I´ve watched them both in his prime, I´ll pick Pernell today but tomorrow I might change my mind and then choose Floyd. So, who do you pick Mayweather or Whitaker?
