Cotto, 30, would like nothing better than to get a rematch against one or both of the fighters involved, since both Pacquiao and Margarito already stopped Cotto and gave him a terrible beating. By being at the Pacquiao-Margarito fight in ringside seats, Cotto can help try and bring interest in a rematch with one or both of the fighters.

Cotto did a good job in his fight against Margarito for nine rounds in their bout in July 2008, moving constantly and tagging Margarito with hard shots on the move. However, Cotto ran out of gas in the 10th and when he finally stopped to trade a little with Margarito near the end of the round, Cotto was badly hurt by a series of uppercuts from Margarito. In the 11th, Margarito finished Cotto off after making him take a couple of knees after landing hard shots.

A rematch between them would be an interesting affair, because their fight was competitive throughout. But a rematch between Pacquiao and Cotto would be something of a joke, a money grab and little else. There’s no point in Cotto and Pacquiao ever fighting again, because their fight last year was hopelessly one-sided and it was so one-sided that there really isn’t even the slightest hope that the outcome would be different in a rematch.

That doesn’t mean that their mutual promoter Bob Arum won’t decide to match Cotto and Pacquiao up anyway, because he was already thinking about matching Pacquiao back up with Cotto in November of this year, but realized that he would have faced a ton of criticism for putting Pacquiao and Cotto back together at this early point, given how one-sided their original fight was. Cotto has fought only once since the defeat to Pacquiao, beating another one of Arum’s stable fighters Yuri Foreman, who fought with only one good leg and ended up getting stopped by Cotto in the 9th round on June 5th.

If Arum insists on putting Cotto back in with Pacquiao for a money fight, it would be nice if Cotto actually fought someone decent like Alfredo Angulo, Sergeii Dzinziruk, Eridlandy Lara or Anthony Mundine. Do I see that happening? No, I don’t. If Cotto faces anyone, it will be Arum’s heavily hyped but terribly limited middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for an easy fight. Cotto would likely lose to Dzinziruk, Lara and Angulo, so I wouldn’t expect Arum to put him in with them. Cotto might not fight anyone before being thrown back in for a money grab in a fight against Pacquiao. That’s a fight that I don’t understand, but it will likely happen anyway. I wouldn’t want to see a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao for free. Judging by the high price tag on the Margarito-Pacquiao PPV card of $55, a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao will likely go for the same amount, maybe even more. I can’t imagine paying that for a fight that you know who the winner is going to be and you know it won’t be interesting. Cotto ran from Pacquiao from round four until the twelfth last time out. That was not a competitive or entertaining fight.
