Jacobs, 23, was stopped in the 5th round in a failed attempt to capture the vacant WBO middleweight title against Russian Dimitriy Pirog on July 31st in his last fight. Jacobs came into the fight as the predicted winner. However, he was totally dominated by Pirog for four rounds before being taken out in the 5th round of a one-sided fight. Jacobs has no clue how to adjust to the Mayweather-esque movements and skills of Pirog.

It wasn’t even a slightly competitive fight, because Jacobs looked like he wasn’t ready to fight a guy in the class of Pirog for that fight. Now, Jacob’s promoters Golden Boy Promotions are going to take things a little slower with him by moving him up slowly the way that they should have done in the first place. The problems Jacobs had going into the Pirog fight was that he had been matched incredibly soft for the most part during his still young three year pro career, and hadn’t been put in with anyone even close to the same kinds of skills as the Russian fighter.

The best fighter that Jacobs was matched against during this time was Ishe Smith, who staggered Jacobs late in the fight and gave him a lot of problems. Jacobs’ management should have seen this as a signal that there were a lot of things they needed to work on before rushing him into a title shot against Pirog. Jacobs will now have the time to mature properly and learn somethings before he’s put in with another middleweight champion. Jacobs needs to learn how to protect himself better, and to use more head movement and stop loading up so much. He’s not a huge puncher and it slows him down when he tries to load up against his opponents.

Jacobs is still ranked fairly high at #9 by the WBO. However, he needs to wait awhile before he takes on guys like Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Pirog.
