Roy Jones Jr. wants David Haye fight in 2011

By William Mackay: Former three division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KO’s) is interested in challenging for the title against World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) in 2011, according to boxing news from thesun.co.uk. Jones, 41, said “I am meeting with David [Haye] and will tell him that we can give the world a great fight. I want one more run at the title.”

Jones previously captured the WBA heavyweight title seven years ago when he dominated then champion John Ruiz, beating him by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in 2003. Unfortunately for Jones, his career then took a steep nosedive when he dropped weight to go back down to light heavyweight.

Jones has been beaten six times since then, including his last two fights against Danny Green and Bernard Hopkins. Although Jones did look good in beating Ruiz years ago, it’s almost impossible to see Jones having any success against a fighter the size, speed and power of Haye.

Jones looks to have lost the ability to pull the trigger on his punches. He also seems to have a chin problem dating back to his one punch knockout loss to Antonio Tarver in May 2004.

Oddly enough, Haye would likely take the fight against Jones seeing it as another easy opportunity for him to defend his title, make a lot of money and all without the risks that a fight against better heavyweights like the Klitschko brothers would pose for him.

It would be really testing the patience of boxing fans, though, because Jones is seen as totally shot by many boxing fans. However, the fight might do well in the UK, because they were really excited about Haye’s fight with 38-year-old John Ruiz in April.

And they’re also really into Haye’s fight against B level heavyweight Audley Harrison, which takes place in November. Jones would fit in nicely with the kinds of fighters that Haye has been fighting since he moved up to heavyweight. The United States boxing fans would have no interest in this fight, but Haye’s loyal UK fans would likely eat it up.
