Margarito’s sparring partners give testimony of how good he is

By Dave Lahr: For those boxing fans who are under the mistaken impression that Antonio Margarito is a shot fighter because of his loss to Shane Mosley last year, they’re probably not going to like the news coming from his sparring partners in training camp in Oxnard, California. Cleotis Pendarvis, Ricardo Williams, Austin Trout and KC Martinez all have sparred with Margarito and they’ve come away very impressed with him.

This isn’t good for Manny Pacquiao, because he’s got the bad luck of having to fight Margarito next on November 13th at the Cowboys Stadium, for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title. In an interview by Doug Fischer at Ringtv.com, Pendarvis said “With Margarito you feel the pressure from the first round because he throws fight shots in one combination.”

Margarito often likes to throw extended combinations in the same way that Erik Morales used to be able to do in his younger and thinner days. If there’s one thing that Pacquiao can’t handle, it’s when one of his opponents throws a lot of punches and in sustained combination attacks.

Pacquiao stops punching and just covers up. He’s going to be reduced to a punching bag for Margarito on November 13th, unless a big part of his trainer Freddie Roach’s training is for him to run from Margarito. Ricardo Williams says “He gets you with a good body shot.”

Williams is so right. He was hit with a really hard body shot in sparring with Margarito, causing Williams a lot of pain. Trout said “You start to feel it by the second round. It’s real.” There it is. Pacquiao is in trouble. Margarito is going to give him a real beating. He’s going to break the little Filipino in front of a large crowd in the Cowboy Stadium and watching at home.
