Froch vs. Abraham: Can Carl box well enough to keep from getting knocked out?

By Scott Gilfoid: If there was ever a time that former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) should want to learn how to box without getting hit, this would be the case now. Froch, 33, will be facing the hardest puncher in the Super Six tournament in Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) on November 27th at the Hartwall Arena, in Helsinki, Finland.

Froch was whipped in his last fight by Mikkel Kessler in April, losing by a 12 round unanimous decision. Froch may not like losing the fight. Indeed, Froch actually thinks he would have won the bout had it taken place in his home city of Nottingham, England.

But the fight should have provided Froch a valuable lesson for him to pay attention to if he is willing to face the truth about himself. Specifically, Froch really needs to work on his defense and find a way to protect his head from getting hit so much.

This is the fight where Froch needs to avoid getting hit as much as possible, because Abraham has hospitalized both of his Super Six tournament opponents Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. I don’t remember Abraham being this big of a puncher when he fought at middleweight.

Who knows? Maybe he lost power in having to melt down from 180 each time he fought at 160. But whatever the case, Abraham seems to be a much bigger puncher at super middleweight, and if he’s allowed to land his big shots against Froch’s unprotected head, I can see a third Super Six fighter ending up in the hospital intensive care unit.

All it takes is one big punch from Abraham, and that’s it – you’re in the hospital. It’s sick. With Froch, and bizarre tendency to fight with both of his arms dangling down by his sides like to ripe bananas, Abraham is going to have a slew of opportunities to land his bone jarring punches.

I don’t know why Froch likes to fight with his hands by his sides. It clearly isn’t working for him anymore, as we’ve seen in his fights against Taylor, Dirrell and Kessler. Froch is getting nailed royally every time.
