By Scott Gilfoid: We still don’t know yet where the bout between Americans Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KO’s) and Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) will be taking place next month. However, at least we have a date for their next Super Six tourney fight, as Dirrell-Ward will be facing off in what will almost guaranteed be a fight that will produce the eventual Super Six tournament winner on November 27th, the same date that the other Super Six tourney fight between Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch takes place in a separate location.
But it’s the Dirrell-Ward fight that will be producing what I believe will be the winner of the tourney.
Dirrell has had the pleasure of facing both of the other contestants Froch and Abraham, and was able to beat Abraham while losing what some refer to as a home town decision to Froch. Dirrell now must beat Ward in order to make it into the semifinals of the tourney. Ward is already guaranteed a spot in the semifinals due to his wins over Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green in the stage 1 and stage 2 part of the Super Six tournament. However, just because Ward has already made it into the semifinals doesn’t mean that he’s just going to lay and his back and let Dirrell win the fight without contesting it. Ward wants to keep his unbeaten record and he also has pride in fighting and he doesn’t want to lose his World Boxing Association super middleweight title, which he won against Kessler last year in November.
Dirrell has to find a way to beat Ward without getting dragged into an inside war. This is Ward’s style of fighting and if Dirrell gets trapped fighting on the inside, he’ll likely lose.
