By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO’s) will be taking on the little known fringe contender Freddy Hernandez (29-1, 20 KO’s) on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Michael Katsidis bout on November 27th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Berto-Hernandez bout, although talked about, has now been confirmed. It’s not even close to being the fight that boxing fans were wanting to see from Berto after suffering through four of Berto’s previous title defenses against less than big stars.

Hernandez, 31, fits in nicely with the kind of opponents that Berto has been fighting thus far since capturing the WBC title two years ago in 2008 against Miguel Angele Rodriguez. It wouldn’t be such a big deal that Berto has been facing soft opposition while defending his WBC title, only HBO has been showing all of Berto’s tittle defenses instead of other, arguably much more interesting bouts. Berto’s fight with Hernandez, like his other fights, will be shown on HBO, so boxing fans will have see yet another mismatch between Berto and an obscure opponent.

Berto was supposed to be fighting welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (20-0, 15 KO’s), but he wanted the fight to take place in Turkey and not the United States. That would have been at least a slightly interesting match-up for Berto, because Aydin can at least punch a little. It’s too bad that some of the other welterweight contenders like Kell Brook, Luis Abregu, Mike Jones or Randall Bailey couldn’t have been brought in to face Berto instead of Hernandez. This is going to be another mismatch, but thankfully the fight will be the co-main event rather than main event.

The card will also have Celestino Caballero vs. Jason Litzau. That fight is going to be a big mismatch with Caballero destroying Litzau. The only fight that seems worthwhile on the card will be the Marquez-Katsidis bout. As for Berto, the guy needs to start facing better opposition. Hopefully, HBO stops showing his fights until he does. It’s not interesting seeing Berto fight opponents that aren’t in his class. He needs to be facing guys like Mike Jones, Kell Brook and Abregu, at the very least.
