One World Champion in each division would save boxing tremendously

By Marquise Bullock: This is a serious topic that needs to be talked about from everyone. Boxing right now is all over the place. The sport has no order right now. But one champion in each weight class could change that in a blank of an eye. Think about it. In the NBA, they play for one trophy, in the NFL they play for one trophy, in the NHL they play for one trophy, why cant each boxing division fight for one belt. If there was only one belt in each division, you wouldn’t see so many champions obviously, but it would be way better.

Think about it. When the Chicago Bulls had their pair of three peat’s in the 90s they where the team to beat at the time. You’d had to stop them to claim to be a champion, there wasn’t multiple trophy’s that you can play for to avoid the Bulls. If there was, the NBA would be a little sloppy now wouldn’t it? The only other trophy besides the Finales trophy would be the Eastern-Western conference trophy’s. But that would be equivalent to the number one and number two ranked in the division. For example take the middleweight division. Danny Jacobs was fighting for a vacant WBO middleweight against Dmitry Pirog, and lost. But the real champion was Sergio Martinez at the time. Why not build up a good enough record, ad least something like 29-0 or 1 to fight for a title, instead of fighting for a paper title that means nothing so early in your career. Not to mention the 3% that sanctioning body takes from the fighters purse.

If there was only one belt in each division, you would see less vacates of the title, and some order in the division. Having a title means nothing if everyone in your weight class has one. A world title would be more significant if you bust your tale to get it. You would see boxers cry in the middle of the ring, knowing how hard they had to work to get one. With one title there could be long reigns of a champions and we could see shutouts, just like Jordan did to Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Payton, etc….. Also the world title fights would be more big on PPV. Imagine watching your favorite fighter rising threw the ranks, busting his tale for a title fight and he finally gets one. Weather he wins or loses it’s a great thing to see. And just like I’ve mentioned if a title is vacant, the two top fighters in that division could fight for it.

This would save the sport in a big way. Like when “Iron” Mike Tyson was the Heavyweight Champ, there was no middle man. It was fight him to for fill your dreams of becoming the heavyweight champ, or change your weight class. Because when Tyson had those belts unified in the 80s it was an complete shutout. Also with one heavyweight title the Klitckhos Brothers would be force into battle. That’s something I would love to see.
