Is there a British heavyweight Round Robin on the horizon?

Image: Is there a British heavyweight Round Robin on the horizon?By Mark Hepplestall: There is the greatest British heavyweight revival occurring now since, ever really. It’s the first time in a long time I can see eight hot prospects on the scene all wanting to fight each other, I just hope they can wait for a few more fights until they are all developed fighters and can be considered contenders. The greatest option for all of these boxers is to go out and win a title the English, British, Commonwealth, European and maybe an intercontinental belt and take all of these into a super six style tournament but with eight boxers. There will be no home or away advantages because all the fights will be in Britain, there will be loads of money floating about and the winner will hold all the belts and most likely become the number one contender to a world title. The fighters that could participate would include:

1: Dereck Chisora 14(9)-0(0)-0, the current Commonwealth and British title holder and says after a few defences he will be fighting for a world title. He is currently rated at number 13 in the world and with so many old and past it fighters rated above him he may be right about the world title shot even though he is never ready for it. He possesses good hand speed, good power, and nice skills and at the age of 26 he can only get better. However at only 6’1 he doesn’t have the size to contend with some of the bigger and better fighters.

2: Sam Sexton 13(6)-2(2)-0, former commonwealth champion and just lost to Derek Chisora and after a few more fights he will be ready to challenge the other contenders and maybe fight for the European title. Not in the greatest shape, has been fortuitous with some decisions in his careers but still has good skills and power. He is defiantly good enough to contend with the other guys in my competition.

3: Tyson Fury 12(9)-0(0)-0, current English champion and wanting to challenge for the British and Commonwealth belts soon. Hate him or love him he puts bums on seats and I think he is an exciting prospect. His corner are now working on his worst vice which is his lack of stamina, more recently he has been looking leaner and once he has 15 – 20 fights could be looking at a world title should he stay undefeated. At 6’7 and almost 18 stone he has power to spare and also has some nice skills to go with it, same he didn’t go to the Olympics. Also at 22 he has time to get better and will most defiantly challenge for a world title in his career.

4: Martin Rogan 12(6)-2(2)-0, older than the rest but still fun to watch. Making his comeback soon after an awful injury he picked up before his losses to Sam Sexton. He is the real rocky story and I thought he was robbed against Sexton the first time round. Maybe he is not likely to win a world title in the future but he is well worth a mention. The prospect of Tyson Fury Vs Martin Rogan for the Irish Championship really excites me and would likely put 20,000 bums in seats in Ireland.

5: Larry Olubamiwo 9(8)-1(0)-0, is a great prospect as long as his head is in the fight unlike his only loss when he just didn’t seem to be there. This guy possesses unbelievable power and is in great physical shape and unlike some of the other boxers doesn’t have problems with stamina, mind you with only one of his fights lasting the distance we don’t really know. One thing we do know is when Larry hits you stay hit.

6: Tom Dallas 11(8)-0(0)-0, great prospect flying under the radar that possesses power, speed, movement and stamina. Great physical shape and genetically suited for the bigger guys at 6’5 and an athletic build, if you have not seen this guy he looks more like a really tall light heavyweight. This guy could beat at least half of the people on this list and will be minimum a British or European level boxer and don’t be surprised if he fights for a world title in 3 or 4 years.

7: David Price 7(5)-0(0)-0, Olympic Bronze medallist and stands at 6’8 and is 27 years old, doesn’t have as long as the other boxers and is guaranteed a huge money showdown with his nemesis Tyson fury who were enemies at amateur level as well. This guy hits hard and could beat any of the boxers listed on this article. He doesn’t seem to have problems with stamina and trained with David Haye for a period of time which will only help him progress.

8: Richard Towers 8(6)-0(0)-0 is 31 years old and had a colourful past. Just out of prison for kidnap and torture charges even though he didn’t hurt anyone yet was involved. He is still one to watch and will get to at least British level in his career. This guy is also flying under the radar and as long as he keeps out of trouble could have a good future.

Best thing about this tournament is it is all fair, they will all make good money, and they will showcase their skills to world audience. Plus one loss in the tournament will not hurt them that much they may all still get world title shots for just fighting better opposition then the other contenders in the world rankings because a world champion is more likely to pick a fighter who has been in four wars that put 20,000 bums in seats and won 3 out of 4 then a guy who fights 4 c level boxers and wins them all.
