Image: Celestino Caballero to fight Jason Litzau on Marquez-Katsidis undercard on November 27thBy Jason Kim: WBA Super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero (34-2, 23 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to super featherweight to take on super featherweight contender Jason Litzau (27-2, 21 KO’s) on the undercard of the clash between WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez vs. WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Caballero vs. Litzau fight is bout made necessary because Caballero has had zero luck in trying to get Top Rank fighters Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa to fight him.

At 34, Caballero can’t afford to wait for them to finally fight him and thus he’s moving up to look for more money fights. Litzau, ranked WBC #4, wba #4, #6 IBF and #10 WBO, is very beatable and should be nothing more than a sacrificial lamb for Caballero to destroy. Litzau is looking a lot better than he was when he was taken out by Roberto Guerrero in an 8th round TKO loss two years ago, but one of the reasons why Litzau has been looking so good is because he’s being matched against soft opposition. In putting him in with Caballero, they’re going from soft to the very best and Litzau is going to really pounded on in this fight, and probably worse than when he dominated by Guerrero.

It’s sad that Caballero has to move up in weight because Gamboa and Lopez should have already have fought by now. But it’s not up to them. It’s up to their promoters and obviously they see Caballero as someone that is too damn good right now to put Lopez and Gamboa in with. That could change in two or three years when Caballero ages some more. If he starts to show signs of getting old, you can bet Lopez and/or Gamboa will be matched up against him in an instant before Caballero is beaten by someone else. But right now, Caballero looks to be a level above Gamboa and Lopez in ability and for that reason, he’ll likely continue to be avoided by Lopez and Gamboa.

It will be interesting to see if Caballero will continue to fight at super featherweight after he destroys Litzau. There’s only a small handful of fighters worthy of fighting at that weight right now, such as Ricky Burns, Jorge Solis, Jorge Linares, and Roberto Guerrero. Caballero is more interested in the titles, and in that case it will be Burns and Solis that he should be gunning for.
