Image: Timothy Bradley not impressed with Alexander’s win over Kotelnik - NewsBy Matt Stein: World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KO’s) wasn’t very impressed with IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander’s performance last Saturday night in beating Andriy Kotelnik by a 12 round unanimous decision in Saint Louis, Missouri. Bradley, 26, has been easily beating his opponents for the last couple of years and not having any problems even against the top fighters in the division. Bradley, after seeing the way that Alexander struggled to beat Kotelnik by a controversial decision, had this to say in an interview at boxingtalk.com: “I wasn’t too impressed with this fight. If Kotelnik did that against him [Alexander], imagine what I am going to do to Alexander.”

Bradley may get a chance to show that if his promoter Gary Shaw can set up a fight with Alexander for January 2011. However, Bradley thinks it’s still too early for this fight and believes that Alexander still needs to mature as a fighter before they tangle. Bradley says “The Alexander fight is will happen, but I still think it is too early for Alexander, he is still too immature, especially with him coming off a fight like his last fight. I dominate my fights.” Bradley is right. It probably is too early for Alexander to be thrown in with him right now.

The 23-year-old Alexander looked every bit his age last Saturday night against Kotelnik, and there were just so many flaws to pick at with his game. Although I think it would be an entertaining fight and a great chance for Alexander to get a good payday, but I think he’ll end up losing badly to Bradley. If Alexander and his promoter are aware of that, and maybe see the fight more as a learning tool than a fight that they have a good chance to win, then I can see it as a good thing. But Alexander can’t think he can beat Bradley coming off a win like that one. That’s the kind of win that messes with a fighter’s confidence, and Alexander he needs to be coming into a fight against Bradley supremely confident about winning otherwise he’ll get beat even worse.

Bradley doesn’t think that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will fight him if the Alexander fight doesn’t take place. Bradley says “They have been talking about Khan, but you know dang well they are not going to send Amir Khan my way, not right now.” Maybe not now and there’s a chance that Khan may never fight Bradley if Amir grows out of the division. He’s 23, but at 5’10”, Khan is going to have a harder and harder time making the 140 pound weight class in two to three more years. He’s probably going to be moving up to welterweight and likely to light middleweight before we know it. Bradley might be too dangerous for Khan right now, and I can’t see Golden Boy Promotions putting Khan in with Bradley in what would be an almost certain defeat of Khan.
