Maidana didn’t look all that bad against Corley – He still wipes out Khan

By Scott Gilfoid: After hearing a lot about how bad Marcos Maidana was supposed to be against DeMarcus Corley last weekend, I expected utter garbage from Maidana when I finally got the chance to see the fight. But I was frankly impressed with him. Maidana showed excellent power throughout the fight and should have won the easier than he did if the referee had taken points away from Corley for his constant fouls. I saw a lot of ugly fouling form Corley, such as leading his head, hitting on the break, grabbing Maidana in a head lock and then tagging him in the face.

That stuff should have led to Corley being penalized. At the very least, he should have had a minimum of three to five points taken away for all the fouling I saw. But I can understand why Maidana had problems knocking Corley out. First of all, Corley’s southpaw stance was a problem for Maidana. He looked confused in trying to figure out the best method of attacking Corley. He also had problems with Corley’s long arms. Corley constantly was looping his shots and his arms would get in the way when Maidana would be coming forward trying to land his own hard punches. Maidana wasn’t really getting hit all that much because Corley was missing an awful lot with his shots. But Corley was able to do a lot of clinching and coming in with his head and it had Maidana off balance.

When Maidana was able to connect with his shots, he did well. In the 6th round, he hurt Corley with a big left uppercut that had Corley holding on for dear life. Maidana tried to finish him off but Corley was able to get out of the round by holding on. Had that been Khan in there with him, Maidana probably wouldn’t have needed any followup punches because Khan would be down from the uppercut. Maidana landed some big shots all of the rounds. He may have looked sloppy and awkward but he was throwing with big power. I can’t see Khan being able to take any of the shots that Corley was eating in every round. I just don’t see it. I think if Khan runs for 12 rounds, he may be able to get a decision if Maidana doesn’t trap him against the ropes. But he will. Khan can’t run for 12 rounds without Maidana catching him with a huge shot in every round. It will only take one big shot from Maidana to put Khan away, believe me.
