Khan vs. Maidana prediction- If it happens

by Ronnie Jordan: After watching World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana’s fights against Victor Cayo and Victor Ortiz its clear to me that Amir khan could and should box the hell out of Maidana. If he doesn’t beat him by a lop sided 12 round decision then he’ll knock him out in the mid to late rounds. Maidana has the hardest punch in the light welterweight division but he also has a poor defence. He’s new to the sport and the lack of technical training is clear to see. His foot work is terrible, he has very little head movement and he’s so wide open when he throws his hooks you could telegraph your punch 10 minutes beforehand and still land.

Let’s look at his recent wins firstly against Victor Ortiz, a fight Victor was heavily favored to win after Maidana’s recent loss to Ukrainian Andriy Kotelnik, because of this he went in trying to fight toe to toe. Ortiz was on the front foot leaving himself open and just not showing Maidana any respect. He fought Maidana’s fight and paid the price. He had his left arm low the hole fight leaving him open to the strait right and it was that punch that did the damage time after time. Ortiz couldn’t resist rushing in and threw way too many power shots trying to knock Madaina out.

With Khan’s discipline under trainer Freddie Roach keeping his defence tight, and using his superior reach and speed, Khan can fight a completely different fight. Against Cayo, Maidana couldn’t pin him down for much of the fight and struggled with simple foot work and head movement. He managed to catch up with Cayo eventually scoring a 7th round knockout, but the barrage of shots Maidana took would of counted for more if Cayo had any sort of power and accuracy.

Khan would have to fight in a similar fashion but with his hands up and using his faster foot work to work Maidana around the ring. At no time does Khan need to get into a brawl and I’m sure he won’t. There is no question if Maidana keeps countering Khan like he did Ortiz that Amir will be seeing stars but there is no reason for Khan to be any where near those short slow hooks. Ortiz has similar power to Khan and he showed Maidana has a vulnerable chin. Marcos will have to rush khan to try and knock him out and Its clear to see khan will land at will as he’s coming in. I think a wiser Victor Ortiz, Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley would also box the socks of Maidana and I’m sure even Paulie Mallignaggi would score a comfortable points win.
