By Jason Kim: HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg is apparently interested in showing a rematch between Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KO’s) and Paul Williams (39-1, 27 KO’s) for October 2nd of this year, according to the LA Times. Williams, 28, won their previous fight by a controversial 12 round majority decision last year in December in an exciting all action fight. However, there are a couple of things that are getting in the way of a Martinez-Williams rematch.

First off, Williams wants to move back down to the welterweight division where he’s hoping to get a big money fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao. This is no knock on Martinez, but he’s not a big enough name to get Williams the huge money that he wants to make. Williams seems to have made a big mistake in leaving the welterweight division in 2008 in search of bigger fights. Those bigger fights have come about unfortunately for Williams, unless you consider Winky Wright, Martinez, Verno Phillips and Kermit Cintron as big money fights. Williams, 6’1”, might be kidding himself if he thinks that Mayweather or Pacquiao will ever fight him.

They won’t. He’s too tall, his arms are much too long and he throws too many punches for them to want to take the risk to fight him. It’s doubtful that Pacquiao’s promoter would even allow him to fight Williams even if he wanted to. As such, a rematch between Martinez and Williams remains up in the air right now. It was a tough fight for both and Williams might not be so interested in taking this fight again unless he’s well paid. It’s a risky fight and he had a lot of problems with Martinez’s movement and his power.

Martinez would like to get fights against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm, Mayweather, Pacquiao or WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto. Right now, there’s probably little chance of any of those fights happening soon. Martinez will likely have to settle for a lot less than what he wants unless he takes the Williams fight that HBO wants.

It’s a situation where the Williams fight might be the most money, but not the huge money that either of them wants for a fight like this. Both Martinez and Williams will have to decide whether it’s worth it to fighting another grueling battle but not for the big money that they want. They could be better off taking less money in easier fights until something big comes along.

After all, they’re the ones that will have to take the blows, not HBO. A fight between Martinez and unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. might be an interesting bout for him and one where he would get a decent payday without taking of shots. However, it’s doubtful that Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum will throw him in with Martinez for what will almost certainly be a one-sided 12 round loss for Chavez. It is a possibility, though, if Arum doesn’t keep Chavez fighting one of his in house fighters like Cotto.
