Donaire having problems making weight

By Eric Thomas: World Boxing Association super flyweight interim champion Nonito Donaire (23-1, 15 KO’s) is reportedly having problems making weight for his bout this Saturday night’s clash against knockout puncher Hernan Marquez (27-1, 20 KO’s) at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Donaire, 27, needs to get down to 115 to make weight, but he is apparently struggling to get down to the weight and is said to be six to eight pounds away still for this Saturdays fight. Donaire plans on moving up in weight to the bantamweight division, which is still only three pounds more at 118.

Most likely, Donaire, if he doesn’t want to have to really drain himself to make weight each time, will have to fight at super bantamweight very soon. At which case, Donaire would find himself taking on guys like Celestino Caballero, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Steve Molitor. Those would make for exciting fights.

However, before Donaire moves up to the super bantamweight division, he’ll likely stop off at bantamweight and try to line up a fight against Fernando Montiel or Yonnhy Perez, the two best fighters in the division. Abner Mares is another fighter that would be a great fight for Donaire. However, Mares doesn’t currently have a title.

At 5’6″, Donaire could fill out all the way up to the featherweight and super featherweight divisions. He would have to add more and power, but it’s certainly possible if Donaire keeps filling out. The main thing is that Donaire fights in weight classes where he doesn’t have to starve himself to make weight and is able to find fighters that want to fight him instead of avoid him. Since defeating Vic Darchinyan by a 5th round TKO in 2007, Donaire has had a hard problem trying to lure Darchinyan back into the ring for a rematch and a chance to pick up a good payday.
