Did Donaire fight as a southpaw because he’s trying to be like Pacquiao?

Image: Did Donaire fight as a southpaw because he’s trying to be like Pacquiao?By Chris Williams: For the past couple of years there have been a number of people who see Nonito Donaire as a younger version of Manny Pacquiao, and see him capable of moving up in weight and dominating each division as he goes. So far, Donaire 27, has won titles in two weight classes – flyweight and super flyweight. You really can’t count Donaire’s super flyweight title because it’s only an interim championship belt and not the full belt you get when you beat the champion or fight for a vacated title.

Donaire has a long ways to before he can ever get to where Pacquiao is at with his seven titles in seven different weight classes. Last Saturday night, Donaire experimented with fighting southpaw against Hernan Marquez at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Arelot,in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Usually when a fighter changes their stance in a fight – especially if they’ve never really done that kind of thing before – they usually just mess around for a minute before going back to their normal fighting stance.

In Donaire’s case, he stuck with fighting southpaw for four long rounds and didn’t look at all good while fighting like that. This makes me think why Donaire try to fight southpaw and why do it for so long when he clearly wasn’t effective using it. Is Donaire trying to emulate Pacquiao by adopting his southpaw stance?

It sounds silly if true, because Pacquiao has always been a southpaw and he didn’t just change to that style at 27. Hopefully, Donaire doesn’t keep experimenting with his fighting stance in his future fights because I think he’s not going to be improving his game any. If he does want to be more like Pacquiao, he needs to just focus on beating the best fighters in his division and then move up fairly quickly.

I can’t see Donaire having the same kind of career that Pacquiao has had because he doesn’t have the same hand speed as Pacquiao and doesn’t like to get in and mix I up like Pacquiao normally does. For example, the crowd was actually booing at times in Donaire’s fight against Marquez last Saturday because Donaire was pecking away on the outside with his jab for prolonged periods of time.

I can’t see a crowd ever booing a fight involving Pacquiao. He’s too much of an action fighter. This is why it’s useless for Donaire to be anything more than what he is. He should stick with his right hand fighting stance and just try to look good as he can.
