Will Froch pull out of the Super Six tournament if he doesn’t get his way and have the fight venue at his desired location?

Image: Will Froch pull out of the Super Six tournament if he doesn’t get his way and have the fight venue at his desired location?By William Mackay: I was somewhat astonished at watching former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) in Showtime’s episode 6 of Fight Camp 360 in which Froch was already threatening to pull out of the Super Six tournament after his fight with Mikkel Kessler on April 24th. Before I watched this episode, I was under the impression that Froch had only started the threats to pull out of the Super Six tournament weeks after losing his fight with Kessler. However, at the post fight press conference after the Kessler fight, Froch learned that his fight against Arthur Abraham wouldn’t be taking place in Nottingham, England. Froch looked pretty upset about it.

Froch immediately said that he wouldn’t be fighting his next Super Six fight against Abraham and quickly said he would pull out of the tournament if he was forced to fight there. Froch and his promoter Mick Hennessy were then informed by Wilfried Sauerland that there was nothing in the contract that said that the Abraham-Froch fight was supposed to take place in Germany.

Instead, it only said that it was going to take place in Europe. It seemed strange that Hennessey was acting like this was news to him. But since then, Froch has continued to say that he won’t be fighting Abraham in Germany and continued to hint at pulling out of the Super Six tournament if he’s forced to fight there. Thus far, Froch has reportedly turned down Germany, Sweden and Majorca.

This leaves a number of other possible locations for the fight in Europe. However, it’s really doubtful that the fan interest for the Abraham-Froch fight will be high if the fight takes place in a neutral country where they’re not familiar with Abraham and Froch. It could be a disaster in terms of ticket sales. If Froch is okay with that, then I say go ahead with the fight, but Abraham and Sauerland Events might not be happy with a fight that takes place where there is little interest in the fight.

I wonder if Froch will pull out of the Super Six tourney if he doesn’t agree with the final venue of the fight. I can understand Froch saying no to Germany, because few fighters want to fight there. But if Froch shoots down one country after another while still threatening to pull out of the tournament if he doesn’t like it, this fight may never happen unless Abraham and Sauerland finally give in to Froch’s wishes and fight the bout in Nottingham.

I would recommend that Abraham and his management team to do just that to appease Froch, but after seeing his win over Andre Dirrell in Nottingham last year in October, I don’t have much faith in Abraham being able to win a decision in that location. I thought Dirrell did more than enough win the Froch fight by a comfortable margin, yet he ended up losing by a 12 round split decision. As such, I think Abraham better be ready to knock Froch out if he gives in and fights him in Nottingham.
