Mayweather deserves to take a two year break if he wants to

Image: Mayweather deserves to take a two year break if he wants toBy Dave Lahr: I just finished seeing Floyd Mayweather’s “Make a Wish” interview from Wednesday where Mayweather talks about wanting to step away from boxing for a couple of years. You know, I totally agree with whatever decision he takes. Mayweather earned the right to take a break if he wants to after beating Shane Mosley like he was nothing on May 1st. In my book, Mayweather earned total respect for that impressive victory.

So if Mayweather wants to take a break from boxing for a year or two, I’m backing whatever decision Mayweather is making career wise. I wouldn’t mind seeing Mayweather spank Manny Pacquiao but let’s be real about this. Mayweather is probably having huge headaches with the negotiation process and might think he’s better off walking away rather than giving in on his principles.

Mayweather is a star and he deserves to get whatever he wants for the negotiation. Pacquiao had the perfect chance to fight Mayweather last time when they tried to negotiate a fight in January, but after Mayweather basically gave into almost everything, the negotiations stalled out after Mayweather asked Pacquiao to agree to blood testing within 14 days of the fight.

That was the time to make the fight but it didn’t happen and now Mayweather is the guy because of his better pay-per-view numbers and his incredible 12 round decision win over Mosley. Mayweather has all kinds of options. He doesn’t need to take the Pacquiao fight if he doesn’t want to. The guy isn’t going to cave in to pressure and take a fight if he’s not getting what he wants.

Believe me, there’s a million fighters out there that Mayweather could fight and get big bank to fight them. We’re probably talking 1 million PPV buys no matter who Mayweather fights. But if the man wants to take some time off, clear his head and work on his charitable activities, who can blame him? When Mayweather comes back, he’ll be reenergized and ready to dominate the boxing world just like before.

If Pacquiao wants to wait around for Mayweather then so be it. Pacquiao is younger than Mayweather by two years, so it won’t kill him to wait around for a couple of years. Pacquiao just needs to wait around for a little while, beat Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton again and Mayweather will be ready to fight again before he knows it. Pacquiao could probably dust those guys off in a round or two each time and not even break a sweat while he waits for Mayweather to come back.
