Image: Was Mosley gassed or did Mayweather simply have too much class for him?By Eric Thomas: Since Saturday night’s one-sided win by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over Shane Mosley, there has been a different opinions as to why Mayweather beat the 38-uear-old Mosley so easily. Some people think that Mosley gassed out after trying to score a knockout in the 2nd round, while others believe that Mayweather simply had too much skills for Mosley to handle. All we can be sure is that Mosley suddenly, for some reason, stopped throwing punches after the 2nd round.

Mosley’s work rate dropped off dramatically after he failed to stop Mayweather in the 2nd after having him hurt briefly. More than that, Mosley looked physically tired, gasping for breath, breathing heavy and keeping his mouth open a lot. So the question is: did Mosley lose because of his conditioning or was it something that Mayweather was doing that made Mosley look so bad? I tend to believe that Mosley had nothing left after failing to score a knockout over Mayweather in the 2nd round.

Maybe if Mosley was a little bit younger, he would have been able to regroup and catch his second wind. However, Mosley hadn’t fought in over a year and a lot of things can change in a person’s body with that much time, especially a fighter that is pushing 40. That’s getting up there in age and Mayweather was putting a lot of demands on Mosley’s aging body by pressuring him and landing clean blows. If this was another opponent with less skills than Mayweather, Mosley might have had time to rest up and get his stamina back together.

Mayweather, however, wasn’t letting up on him and get nailing Mosley over and over again in the fight with one big shot after another. Beyond the conditioning issue, there’s also the things that Mayweather was doing in the fight that made it harder for Mosley to get his shots off. First of all, Mayweather was countering Mosley hard every time Shane would attempt to land a shot.

The crowd really got into it every time Mayweather would make Mosley pay for one of his attempts to land. This may have had an adverse effect on Mosley, making him gun shy about wanting to try and throw punches. Mayweather was also doing a good job of making Mosley miss with his shots by leaning away from his shots at the last second to avoid getting hit. And when Mosley would miss, Mayweather would fire back a hard shot immediately and catch Mosley. This obviously contributed to Mosley not wanting to throw punches at Mayweather.
