Image: Is Vegas the better option for Mayweather-Pacquiao rather than the Cowboy Stadium?By Sean McDaniel: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would like nothing better than to put the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in the 100,000 seat Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. By doing that, the 78-year-old Arum would be able to maximize profits for the fight and make a huge bundle if he can sell out the stadium. The Cowboy Stadium owner Jerry Jones also would like for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight to take place at his stadium. That was the original fight that Jones wanted but he had to settle for a fight between the much lesser known Joshua Clottey vs. Pacquiao last March.

That fight was unable to sell out the stadium and resulted in only 51,000 fans showing up rather than 100,000. Those are still really good numbers for a fight that was a horrible mismatch on paper before the first punch was ever thrown. Mayweather wants nothing to do with the Cowboy Stadium, preferring that the fight take place in his home city of Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s not hard to understand why.

As writer John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Sun pointed out in his recent article, the Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight hard numerous movies stars and important celebrities that showed up for the fight. In contrast, the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight had mainly ex-Cowboy football stars. The thought here is that the movie stars prefer to go to an exciting place like Las Vegas with its many attractions rather than Arlington, Texas, which has much fewer things to do.

The Mayweather-Mosley crowd had famous celebrities like Arnold Shwartzenegger, Muhammad Ali, Eva Longoria, Mark Wahlberg, Maria Carey, Neil Diamond, Jamie Foxx, Mike Tyson, Leonardo Dicaprio and Michael J. Fox in attendance, to name just a few of the many famous celebrities that came for the fight.

If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight ends up in Vegas, it could wind up at the MGM Grand. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer points out that a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could end up getting 70,000 fans for that fight, if you count the fans that are watching pay-per-view inside the hotel. Beyond just the fight itself, there are many more things to do in Vegas than in Arlington in terms of gambling and other night life activities in the city. Vegas has it all. For fans, they would have a lot of things to do in Vegas besides just watching the fight. It would bring a lot of money into the city with the surge of fans and there would be more choices for the fans that come there rather than Arlington, Texas.
