Image: Green vs. Ward: Will this be the most one-sided fight of the Super Six tournament?By William Mackay: 30-year-old Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO’s) will be taking a monumental step up in competition on June 19th against undefeated World Boxing Association super middleweight champion Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) in the Super Six tournament at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. For Green, this will be his first fight of the Super Six tournament because he’s stepping in to replace Jermain Taylor who departed after sustaining a bad knockout from Arthur Abraham. Green looked nothing like a Super Six contestant in his last fight against 38-year-old Tarvis Simms last October.

Green looked clumsy, wide open defensively and unable to put together more than one punch at a time in that fight. Simms gave him a lot of problems and was able to hit Green pretty much whenever he wanted. Although Green was able to land an occasional hard shot every now and then, he was unable to follow up with any additional punches. But more of a problem than that was how easily Green was hit by Simms. He was hit repeatedly by long straight left hands from Simms in the fight, even when many of them were badly telegraphed.

Green was slow to react from the shots until they would impact on his head. He didn’t land counter shots and did a lot of cringing and holding. I have a bad feeling about his fight with Ward. As bad as Green looked in his fight with Simms and as bad as he looked against Edison Miranda, I think he’s several levels over his head in this fight against Ward. I think Green is good against 2nd tier opposition with weak chins, but against a top level fighter that can take or block his occasional pot shots he likes to throw, Green is way out of his element. I think he’s going to take a pounding against Ward and likely end up getting stopped by the 6th round.

Ward looked sensational beating Mikkel Kessler last November in an 11 round round technical decision. He badly schooled Kessler, beating him so easily. Kessler kept trying to figure out what to do against the slashing attacks and the fast movement from Ward, but he had no clue what to do. After Kessler was cut over both eyes, he was effectively fighting blind and unable to cope with Ward’s fast punches. The fight was eventually stopped in the 11th round due to the deep cuts over Kessler’s eyes. He later said he didn’t know what happened to him and thought he wasn’t himself in the fight. He was himself. It was because of Ward’s incredible talent that Kessler looked so bad. I imagine he would do the exact same thing to Kessler in a rematch. The thing of it is, I think Kessler is a lot better fighter than Green and that tells you how badly Green is going to be in over his head against Ward on June 19th. Granted, Green will have a small chance of scoring a knockout, but that’s about it. He’s going to be in a lot of trouble against Ward and I think this fight is going to be a huge blowout.
