Fights that could make 2010 the best boxing year ever

By Eamon McDonald: There are so many brilliant match-ups to be made before the end of year that leads me to believe this could be one of the best year’s boxing has ever had. The obvious one to be made is Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, and I fully believe it will be made before the years over, but there are plenty of other match-ups that will spark interest from boxing fans and may even create new boxing fans.

A magical match-up to be made in the junior welterweight division in the summer has to be Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander – Marcos Maidana recently withdrew from fighting Bradley due to a back injury and it almost seems like it is fate that is trying to pitch these two exciting young boxers together. I would also like to see Amir Khan face Maidana in autumn, which would be another great match up of the class boxer versus puncher. The winner of these two fights then face each other! Hell, the losers could face each other as well. There are 3 brilliant matches already that us boxing fans (and aspiring amateur boxers like myself) would love to see.

A mega fight between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko HAS to happen before the year is out. Why you ask? Well, not only do us fans want it but it would also make the heavyweight division light up. Personally, I think David Haye wins this due to his movement. Haye and Wladimir both have excellent power but Haye probably has the upper hand on speed. I see this as a Haye UD or KO. Wladimir always looks shocked when he gets hit flush on the chin and I fully expect Haye to rattle him a few times on the button I simply feel Haye is too quick a mover for Wladimir to catch him. Then, if Haye wins, we can expect the heavyweight division to be back to its normal, non-giant self, with interesting match-ups everywhere from Haye vs. Tomasz Adamek to Haye-Solis to Solis vs. Alexander Povetkin and there’s many more! Odlanier Solis is capable of being the best but his weight is a big issue, he’s 30-40 lbs heavier than Arreola and a few inches shorter. By the way, I don’t want to see Vitali Klitschko boxing anymore, I simply feel he is done and I don’t see the point in him staying on and then if he beats David Haye and retires we won’t have much of an exciting division because he will have just wiped it all out. I see Haye vs. Vitali as a real boring one similar to Haye vs. Nikolay Valuev.

The last division I want to mention is the featherweight match-up between Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez. I would love to see this fight and I honestly believe Yuriorkis Gamboa is going to wipe the floor with anyone he faces. I really do hope Gamboa can handle moving up in weight as well as Pacquiao because he is such an exciting boxer with unbelievable speed and power.

Oh, and make Paul Williams – Sergio Martinez II.
