By Sean McDaniel: Enzo Calzaghe, the father and trainer of former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s), says that the reports of Joe coming back are totally false. In an article at the BBC, Enzo says “There is no truth in it, and I would be the first to know.” There was an article recently that came out saying that Calzaghe was planning on staging a comeback against Bernard Hopkins. Calzaghe has been retired since 2008, hanging up his gloves after beating Roy Jones Jr.
Since that time many people have been wondering when/if Calzaghe will come out of retirement. At the time that he retired, he was still fighting at a very high level and considered the best fighter in the super middleweight division. It’s rare for a fighter to go out on the top like that, which is why his loyal fans have been hoping that Calzaghe would come back for a fight or two for old time’s sake.
It would be asking a lot for Calzaghe to put the gloves back on and start training again and take on one of the Super Six tournament contestants. However, a fight against the 45-year-old Hopkins wouldn’t be that big of a deal for Calzaghe, as Hopkins hasn’t looked good in his last two fights and would likely struggle badly with Calzaghe if he has anything left. At the time of Calzaghe’s retirement there were a number of opponents that fans wanted him to fight, starting with Chad Dawson.
However, Calzaghe felt that he had nothing to prove, even though a win over Dawson would have answered a lot of questions about his talent. Some boxing fans feel that Calzaghe fought mostly soft opponents until late in his career when he fight the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Jeff Lacy, Sakio Bika, Jones and Hopkins. Fans wanted Calzaghe to fight Kelly Pavlik. However, the fight was never made and Pavlik was eventually schooled by Hopkins in October 2008. Carl Froch was another fighter that fans wanted Calzaghe to face. Froch was recently beaten by Calzaghe victim Mikkel Kessler last month.
