Image: Cotto-Foreman: Can Miguel Get a break?By Eric Torres: I have been an avid boxing fan for quite sometime now and must say that Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) is one of the bravest warriors I have had the pleasure to watch. A lot of fighters out there can learn a thing or two about class and professionalism. Cotto has not only displayed courage & heart but has also displayed a loyalty not only to himself & his family, but to pleasing his fans all over the world.

Miguel Cotto is about to embark on his fourth title in a third Division. With the help of Emanuel Steward in his corner things are looking better than they have in quite some time. The doubters may point to his losses to Margarito and Pacquiao and say he is washed up, I say to those doubters why the lack of confidence? Many of the greatest boxers in history have lost a time or two, what defines them is the will to continue moving forward & redefining themselves along the way. Cotto is on the same exact journey that fighters such as Ali, Holyfield, Hagler, Duran, Mosley, Lewis and Pacquiao have endured. Cotto’s self awareness of what had been going wrong in his last few fights finally dawned on him. Cotto realized he needed a change and needed to rethink his whole approach in the way he went about preparing for his fights. Once he realized that, he enlisted the help of arguably one of the best trainers of all time. Now with Steward in his corner for his upcoming June 5th fight against Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) skies the limit for Cotto.

All things point towards a Cotto win. Emanuel Steward is confident in Cotto and what he has accomplished during this training camp. No one ever doubted Cottos skill, what people doubted was whether you could teach an old dogs new tricks. All reports that are coming in from Tampa are that Cotto looks magnificent. They point to his balance, his speed, focus and his ability to throw combinations with maintaining his stamina. Cotto himself has stated that he had lost something along the way. He points to his ”bad habits” that need to be corrected. So with the work of Emanuel Steward it seems that those Bad Habits have been addressed and Cotto is a new and much more sound boxer than he was before. If this is all the case then Yuri Foreman does not stand a chance in there upcoming fight.

I close with this question for you Cotto doubters. Has Cotto been in the ring with tougher opposition than Yuri? Yes, he has. Paulie Malinaggi, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Joshua Clottey, Carlos Quintana, Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito to name a few. Cotto has the pedigree and experience to carry him through this fight. Now I ask you, has Yuri ever been up against an elite fighter such as Miguel Cotto is in his career? Not at all! Yuri has never been in the ring with the type of boxer that Cotto is. Yuri is a paper champion. His most notable win was against an overweight champion in Santos, who was coming off a two year layoff. This Fight will come down to experience & the will to win. Cotto is redefining himself in the second phase of his career and with the help of Steward things look bright.
