By Dave Lahr: I can’t say I was impressed with what I saw of WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto last night in his 8th round stoppage of Carlos Quintana.
Berto, besides his lack of movement, showed horrible defense and was hit almost will by Quintana. I don’t have a good feeling about Berto’s chances of beating some of the better welterweights in the division. Berto fought as if his he had leg weights attached to his legs all night long.
I swear he moves like he’s lugging around a cart and not able to move. Quintana boxed circles around Berto, and In think if Quintana didn’t look so weak and tired by the 8th, he would have fought well enough to decision Berto. The lack of defense from Berto was really troubling. I don’t know what’s going to happen to the guy if he fights someone that can actually fight like Mosley or Mayweather.
I think Berto is extremely fortunate that he pulled out of his fight with Mosley recently, because I think he would have been knocked out by Mosley without a few rounds if he had been in there with him on Saturday instead of the light hitting Quintana. Berto has a bad habit of coming in straight up with his chin out. It’s like he’s begging to be hit in the jaw. A good fighter is going to see Berto’s wide open chin and belt him and have him staggering around the ring before long.
What good is Berto’s hand speed if he has no defense and can’t move to save his life? I think he’s lucky that he’s the WBC champion, because there’s no one to really threaten him over there. He’s needs to learn some defense because I think he’s going to get destroyed if he ever fights someone good. I was wondering why he keeps fighting small guys like Juan Urango. The guy has defended his title just a few times and faced light welterweights and now Quintana, a fighter with zero power. They’re going to have to take the training wheels off sooner or later, but I hope they teach him some defense before they do.
