Froch-Kessler: Will Carl become more humble when/if he loses to Mikkel?

Image: Froch-Kessler: Will Carl become more humble when/if he loses to Mikkel?By Scott Gilfoid: There’s one thing that jumps out at you when listening to one of WBC super middleweight champion Car Froch’s interviews and that’s how cocky the guy is. For a fighter that went life and death to beat his last three opponents, Froch comes across like he’s been massecuring everybody instead of barely squeaking by with a win. Froch is talking ‘decapitating” Kessler left and right, saying “He has no chance” all this other blather. I don’t know if Froch really believes what he’s saying but if he does, it’s kind of sad because he seems to be out of touch with the reality of his last three fights.

I mean Froch was on his way to losing his fight against Jermain Taylor last year in April until he grabbed a victory from the jaws of defeat in the 12th round by stopping an exhausted Taylor. You can say what you want about that being a result of Froch’s great stamina, but the fact is Taylor had been having problems fading in his fights for the past four years going into his fight with Froch, so it came to no surprise to me that Taylor once again gassed out late in the fight and gave it away.

Froch’s win over Andre Dirrell last October was another case of Froch winning by a fight that some people saw as close. In this case, Froch didn’t finish strong at all in the last three rounds. It was Dirrell who was the stronger fighter and who appeared to win the last three rounds with ease, even hurting Froch in the 10th with big left hands that caused Froch to stagger. I thought Dirrell won a clear cut decision, but the two European judges felt that Froch won the fight.

The Mexican judge had Dirrell winning the bout, as I did. But let’s say Froch gets his backside handed to him in the worst way by Mikkel Kessler this Saturday night in Herning, Denmark, will Froch be more modest about himself afterwards or will he continue to talk about how he’s going to “smash” the Super Six tournament competitors. I think it’s downhill from here for Froch.

I see him losing to Kessler and then losing to Arthur Abraham in his last fight in the first part of the Super Six tourney. That should finish Froch off in terms of the tournament. He could then go home to Nottingham, lick his wounds and figure out what went wrong. I think it would be good to see Froch go up against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. That would be a great fight between two tall, skinny sluggers trading bombs for 12 rounds. The problem is that the interest probably won’t be there if Froch takes losses to Kessler and Abraham. Oh well.
