How come Pacquiao got so beat up by Clottey?

Image: How come Pacquiao got so beat up by Clottey?By Esteban Garduno: I know how fans of Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) think he looked sensational in his 12 round decision win over Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, but Pacquiao sure did get beaten up by Clottey, didn’t he? Look at Pacquiao’s face after the fight, badly marked around both eyes, his face swollen from Clottey’s powerful shots and an appearance of someone you could easily mistake as the loser had you not watched the fight. And then look at Clottey, not a scratch on his face, barely sweating at all and looking very much like the winner of the fight.

I wasn’t impressed with Pacquiao’s performance either. He took the much harder and cleaner shots in the fight, looked weak and small. Pacquiao’s defense was totally missing all fight long and all he really did was throw a lot of punches. Basically, Pacquiao was like a smaller version of Antonio Margarito. Even the movement from Pacquiao wasn’t that impressive.

Pacquiao looked lead-footed and appeared very slow in moving around the ring. He wasn’t able to jump side to side to get different angles like he had earlier in his career. When Pacquiao tried to do this, he was so slow that Clottey had no problem turning to meet him. Instead of getting Clottey out of position, all it did was waste energy for Pacquiao and make him look like someone bouncing around for no reason.

Pacquiao might has well just stood in front of Clottey all fight long instead of using his movement, because Pacquiao looked really slow and Clottey wasn’t having any problems tracking him. But Pacquiao looked like hell after the fight, didn’t he? God, Clottey gave Pacquiao a minor beating in there with his powerful shots.

I’d hate to see what would have happened if Clottey had doubled his work rate and threw a few more punches. Pacquiao would have taken a real beating. I could see Pacquiao with both of his eyes swollen shut, barely able to see anything at all if Clottey had thrown more punches. Freddie Roach said after the fight that if Clottey had been more offensive, Pacquiao would have knocked him out. Do you believe that? I don’t.

There’s no way Pacquiao would have stopped Clottey even if Pacquiao had been able to land some shots. Clottey isn’t the type of fighter that gets’ knocked out. Clottey would have taken those shots without any problems, and really tore up Pacquiao’s face in the process. I think its wishful thinking on Roach’s part, trying to make excuses for why Pacquiao got so beat up in the fight.

Sorry, Roach, but if Clottey had been more offensive than he was, Pacquiao would have taken a royal beating much worse than he did. Roach needs to consider himself lucky that Clottey didn’t throw more punches because Pacquiao would have gotten really beaten up and people would be wondering about him, especially if Clottey ended up beating Pacquiao.

In seeing him easily Clottey was able to hit Pacquiao all night long, I can’t realistically give Pacquiao any chance of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. Clottey showed how easy it is to hit Pacquiao, and if Clottey can do this then Mayweather, a fighter even faster and more accurate than Clottey, will have a field day against Pacquiao.
