Image: Froch wants bout with Kessler to take place in Copenhagen, not Herning - NewsBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KO’s) isn’t pleased with his next Super Six bout taking place in Herning, Denmark. Froch, 32, will be facing former World Boxing Association super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KO’s) in Mikkel’s home country. Froch much prefers that the fight take place in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, so that Froch’s British boxing fans can have an easier time coming to see him fight and give him some much needed support against the tough Kessler.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Kessler’s promoter, Sauerland, feels that they can get a bigger crowd in Herning compared to Copenhagen. However, Froch isn’t pleased with the location of the fight, saying “It’s a strategic move on the part of Kessler’s promoters to get me to defend my title in the middle of an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere that no one can get to.”

It’s hard to see what Froch is complaining about. In the past, he’s said that he doesn’t mind traveling to other fighter’s home turf to fight. Why Froch all of a sudden is worrying about this now is perhaps a little telling. Is Froch suddenly getting cold feet about this fight? Is Carl worried about having to face Kessler in front of a huge pro-Kessler crowd?

It’s going to be bad enough for Froch having to face a talented fighter like Kessler to begin with. Froch didn’t look at all good in his last two fights against Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. Froch needed a knockout in the final round of his bout with Taylor to defeat him last year in April. If not for the knockout, Froch would have lost the fight. And in Froch’s bout with Dirrell, Froch appeared to lose the fight in the minds of many boxing fans.

I had Dirrell easily beating Froch eight rounds to three with one even. Froch had problems making contact all night long against Dirrell, and only seemed to land with any consistency when he was in close often holding onto Dirrell. In some respects, Kessler is even better than Dirrell and Taylor. He’s sturdier of chin and a pure boxer with power in both hands.

Froch could end up getting totally dominated by Kessler. Having fans rooting against him probably won’t help Froch any. But look at this way. Even if Froch were to get his wish and fight in Copenhagen, I can’t imagine that many loyal British fans willing to travel all the way to Copenhagen to see him fight.

Sure, Froch will get a few fans willing to travel all that way to watch him, but probably not enough to drown out all the pro-Kessler fans in the arena. My advice for Froch is to just accept that the fight is going to take place in Herning. That’s how those things go. If Kessler was fighting Froch in Nottingham, do you think Kessler would complain that it’s not good for his fans to come and see him fight?
