Mayweather-Pacquiao: Mega-Fight In The Vegas Light on March 13th

mayweather4533269By Frank Carr: Unofficial news has started flowing quickly. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ready and willing to take the March 13, 2010 date to meet with Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao in the squared circle and figure out just who is the reigning pound-for-pound king. Ding’ Ding’.

There are still things left to be finalized, for one where it will take place. And I can not see this taking place anywhere other than Las Vegas.

There is a chance it will happen some other place other than Vegas.. there is also a chance Vegas will outlaw gambling. Need I say that is a very slim chance. Vegas needs this, and if they lose out on it, what does that say about their ability to pull in the “big fishes” which bring in massive amounts income that help pay for those billion dollar casinos. Not to mention they have been hit hard lately and need this income, but haven’t we all. The only thing that could hurt the chances of Vegas getting this is that it is taking place in March instead of May. Vegas has a high of about 70° (Fahrenheit) in March which is, well, not necessarily pool or fun in the Vegas sun weather. Plus the pools in some places and other summer activities don’t open untill March 15, maybe they will open early for this. It could be a good thing since it won’t be nine thousand degrees when your walking down the Strip, however May only has a high of about 90° so that would have been nice.

Where in Las Vegas it could take place would include the MGM Grand Garden Arena of course, which sits about 17,000. Then there is the Thomas & Mack Center which holds around 20,000. Then there is a possibility of building a temporary stadium that seats 30,000. Other areas have been suggested such as the Sam Boyd Arena which seats 45,000 but “It’s too far away from the Strip. The casinos aren’t going to support it there,” said Arum.

However don’t count out other states venue’s for different bouts in the future. Arum has mentioned Yankee’s Stadium as a possibility for Cotto’s next bout, and the Dallas Cowboys Stadium as the venue for the now seemingly “bluff” match Pacquiao and Foreman were supposed to have. So it’s clear the conversations he is having with those interests aren’t going to waste, but most likely will not come to fruition this time around.

Speaking of chances, there was a chance the May 1st date (which Mayweather was also said to be able to make) was going to be possible even with Pacquiao running for Congress in the Philippines, if he was running unopposed. But, that was not the case, as his opponent Chiongbian filed his C-O-C (Certificate of Candidacy) and will contest Manny Pacquiao in the congressional run. One wonders if Pacquiao wins or loses this bout, if that will hurt or help his chances in winning. He has ran for a political spot before and lost back in 2007. However Pac-Man’s fame and recognition has most likely and grown since then.

That left only the March 13th date really available if it was to happen in the first half of 2010 or perhaps at all, and Mayweather may not play baseball but he knows business and stepped up the plate on this one, accepting the date he was seemingly rufusing earlier. Much to the delight of many.

It’s worthy to note that it is currently still speculation on what will happen, but it has no where else to go, a 99 says this is how it’s going to go down. Unless of course they can make it May 1st date which seems unlikely, more than unlikely.

There is not much left to anticipate other than who’s going to win. The weight should be at 147lbs. and there will probably be a rematch clause if Mayweather were too lose, not sure about Manny, but all that is details. Let’s go back a beat, who’s going to win? That will be debated, bet on, hyped up, and most eagerly awaited for months to come.

I would say, well, as of wondering who would win myself alot lately, I started thinking about opponents Mayweather (40-0, 25KO’s) has faced and how they would do in the ring with Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38KO’s). Some of which we’ve seen, Hatton, De La Hoya, all of which Pacquiao made much lighter work of than Mayweather. However some could argue Mayweather beat Marquez more decisively then Pacquaio. But since then Pacquiao has become better then he has ever been. Of course Mayweather is a pure athlete and always has been.

Regardless of who wins, I just want what boxing is suppose to provide for all the fans that spend 50$ a pop on PPV, 55$, dare I say 60$ plus on this one. To be entertained. So let’s hope the “Mega-Fight in the Las Vegas Light” lives up to the hype.
