By Jorge Lugo: In a world where everyone takes advantage of each other Mayweather Jr has used his head just as much as his fists. With everyone (including Me) stating Mayweather hasn’t fought real fights or that he is a average fighter is one thing. But the fact is, from what I understand. Mayweather has agreed on his half to fighting Manny Pacquiao in 2010. He has also been looking into the Berto-Mosley winner. These realities alone have made one thing clear. Mayweather Jr is the brains and skill of boxing. Simply put, it is time to give him his credit due.
Can you imagine if all fighters had the brains of Floyd Mayweather Jr? I truly believe all of them would be millionaires. Although Mayweather’s record to me is a bit suspect, he has used his name and defensive skills against his opposition to market himself for his next fight as well as to the general public. I cannot deny his shown defense against the fighters he fought was good. However, is defense outside the ring is way more impressive.
Who knows how much money he will get for fighting Pacquiao. All I know is that he was the first one talking after Pacquiao beat Cotto. In fact, its not even one month after and he has agreed to fight Pacquiao. Why? Because to Mayweather, money speaks louder than words. This also shows that Mayweather couldn’t care less what the general public thinks of him(including me), instead he cares more about how much he can get out of boxing! Love him or hate him, you have to respect that.
To promote himself to be the P4P best was genius marketing. To have a boxing record of 40-0 speaks to the average fan with the perception of an elite fighter. Mayweather Jr. is the brains of boxing. He hasn’t fought the fighters that I would of like to have seen but he also hasnt been beat up as much as the fighters who do fight each other. Boxing legacy aside, Mayweather Jr. knows how to milk the cow! With the you have to give him is credit due.
