Danny Williams vs. Sam Sexton – Danny don’t do it!

sexton343By Adam Fillingham: On the thirteenth of February in 2010 Danny Williams will once again return from defeat to attend to business on domestic level. His opponent on the night will be the once defeated Commonwealth champion Sam Sexton. Williams will also be defending his British belt.

The point of this article is due to the fact it is a big mistake coming back out of retirement once again to face one of the hottest prospects on the domestic scene. After two defences against the tough but unskilled fighter John McDermott (wins by majority decision and split decision) that many fans were not thrilled with, it is about time to think about calling it a day.

Williams lost his last fight to the overweight Carl Baker. After having a bad first round in which he got knocked down, he picked up his pace and made the decision close. Unfortunately the fight still ended in defeat.

He has slowed down remarkably in the last few years which is not a great sign since he wasn’t all that fast in the first place. His power is still there but his chin was always an issue. With him slowing down not being able to get out of the way of shots. This means he will get hit more and a shaky chin is a recipe for disaster.

Sam Sexton has got reasonable hand speed and reasonable power but has nothing spectacular in his arsenal. Sexton claimed his commonwealth belt when he defeated tough undefeated Martin Rogan and then defended it against the same man in a rematch six months later. Sexton also won the British competition “Prizefighter” last December defeating undefeated Chris Burton.

At Williams’ age he is going to have a lot of problems with Sexton. Sexton would have given Danny a lot of problems in the prime of his career but now at the frail age of 36 its hard to predict what will happen as anything could.

I’m putting the message here now. DANNY DON’T DO IT! Your in a lose lose situation. If you lose then your legacy will be ruined more than it already has been and will be going out on not just one loss, but two. If you win then you have defeated one of the best in a bad crop of up and coming British heavyweight contenders (Sam Sexton, Tyson Fury, Derek Chisora, Larry Olubamiwo and David Price) and will be ridiculed by fans for ruining a big prospect and leaving the sport.

Williams will also prove nothing by defeating Sexton. If he wins then fans will just say that Sexton wasn’t all that good anyway. Also you have to be thinking about Danny’s long term health as he has been fighting for a good fourteen years.

If Danny is looking to go out on a win then maybe he should think about a different opponent. Sam Sexton Vs Danny Williams is a 50/50 one. No one quite knows who to go for. That’s the same for me. I would not like to even start thinking about a prediction for this one. If I had to though I would have to go with the veteran Williams. Don’t ask me why I just have a feeling that he will have too much for the Norwich man (just to point out that I also thought Sexton would lose to Rogan in both fights and wrote him off in the prizefighter tournament so maybe you should go put your money on Sexton ASAP.)
