By Liam Santiago: Former undisputed light welterweight champion, Ricky Hatton has stunned boxing fans by stating that he wants to fight Miguel Cotto next, but only if Cotto can defeat Pacquiao. Speaking to the sun Hatton said, ”If Cotto wins, I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t fancy a fight with him. I’ve faced the best pound-for-pound fighters in Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao, so I’ve never shied away from a challenge. If Cotto becomes the pound-for-pound king, I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t fight.”
Hatton, like myself, believes that Cotto will beat Pacquiao, mainly because of power. Hatton stated that in his bout with the Pac Man, he shook Pacquiao up on more than one occasion and he believes Cotto will stop him, which will open the door for a major showdown with Hatton. He said, ”I’d like to think Pacquiao will win as I’ve got a lot of time for him both as a fighter and as a person. But Cotto’s strong and powerful and you can’t discount him at all. I know Pacquiao knocked me down twice in the first round but I came back and he commented that I hurt him before he caught me.”.
If you ask me, this fight is three or four years too late. Hatton should have fought Cotto when they were both campaigning at light welterweight, maybe instead of the likes of Ray Olivera, but that is probably the fault of promoters. If it was to take place it would be an amazing clash of styles. Both fighters come forward. Both fighters have immense power. Who do I think would win? I am not going to say yet, I need time to weigh things up.
Hatton also ruled out a fight with young novice Amir Khan. He said, ”I can’t see a fight with Amir ever happening. He’s a friend of mine and he’s also promoted by Warren. There’s history between myself and Warren so I can’t see us working together. The only way that fight might ever happen is if I promoted it — and that’s because I’d like the money to go in mine and Amir’s pockets!”
