Mosley: “I think Floyd’s a Little Intimidated and Afraid of Me”

may323By Chris Williams: Shane Mosley had less than positive things to say about Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a recent interview at Fight Hype, saying among other things, “I think Floyd’s a little intimidated and afraid of me.” Mosley is talking about how Mayweather suddenly froze up an old engine block when Mosley walked up on Max Kellerman and Mayweather following Floyd’s 12 round victory over lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday night.

Mayweather looked afraid and very uncomfortable as Mosley suggested that they fight. Mosley thinks that Mayweather wants to fight smaller guys like Marquez and Manny Pacquiao rather than fight someone his own size like himself. “He [Mayweather] wants to jump around and fight little guys,” Mosley said. “He’s [Mayweather] hoping that Pacquiao will win [in his November 14th fight against Miguel Cotto] so he can go and fight Pacquiao and then he’ll go back into retirement,” Mosley said.

Mosley, 38, is hoping to interrupt Mayweather’s recent pattern of fighting small fighters by challenging him and calling him on what Mayweather has been doing. It’s a gamble that likely won’t work, because Mayweather appears risk aversive right now and isn’t looking to fight someone his own size or bigger. Mayweather wants a big money fight against Pacquiao, and like Mosley says, Mayweather will probably go back into retirement after his fight against Pacquiao if it nets Mayweather a big payday of twenty million dollars or more.

That kind of money should last Mayweather for at least two years before he needs to make another comeback. Mosley can’t afford to wait that long for Mayweather to reemerge from any additional retirements, so he needs to try and land a fight with Mayweather now while Mosley is still relatively young.

Mosley has taken some heat for interrupting Mayweather’s interview with Kellerman moments after the Marquez fight ended. However, Mosley had little choice but to give it a shot because this was his best chance to have a worldwide audience see that Mayweather was bypassing him for fights against smaller opponents. It wouldn’t be a big deal if Mosley wasn’t considered to be the best fighter in the welterweight division at this time.

That’s what makes this so sad. Mayweather should be fighting someone like Mosley, or another top welterweight in the division with similar talent rather than fighting smaller opponents. However, Mayweather doesn’t really need to fight anyone his own size, at least not if HBO is willing to show his pay per view fights.

“Floyd should be ashamed for beating up a lightweight [Marquez],” Mosley said. This is what a lot of people have been saying about Mayweather. With as much talent that Mayweather has, they wonder why he’s chosen to fight smaller fighters rather than opponents his own size.

Mosley says that Mayweather is a talented fighter, but isn’t quite so sure about it because of the tiny fighters that Mayweather has been fighting since 2007. Mosley feels that he has Mayweather’s fighting style figured out and knows what to do to beat him if given the chance. Sadly, it’s unlikely that Mosley will ever be given that chance to fight Mayweather and prove his theory.
