Mayweather-Marquez: This is Going to Be a Major Slaughter

mayweather43429By Chris Williams: I see this Saturday nights bout between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez as the worse mismatch in mega fights since the Ricky Hatton vs. Manny Pacquiao bout in May. I like boxing, but I don’t like paying $50 and not getting my monies worth out of the deal. I don’t think the Mayweather vs. Marquez bout is a fight where I’ll get my hard earned monies worth. What we’re talking about essentially here is a lightweight vs. welterweight.

How appealing is that? If you’ve got a younger, faster, bigger welterweight like Mayweather facing an older, slower, smaller lightweight like Marquez, who do you think is going to win the fight? Gee, that’s a real tough one, isn’t it? Of course Mayweather is going to win the fight.

This is to be a major slaughter, and that’s why I don’t see this as being worth $49.95. Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth even $5 bucks to pay to see this kind of fights. For me, I’d watch it on ESPN, and make sure I stocked up ahead of time with lots of candy and caffeine to make sure I can stay awake. Mayweather is going to do what he always does, mainly run around the ring, jabbing and picking the slower Marquez apart. It’s going to be like target practice the way that Mayweather destroys Marquez.

I have no problem with seeing Mayweather beat someone up, but I at least want it to be a competitive fight going into the bout if I’m being asked to pay $50 to see the thing. I think there are plenty of opponents that Mayweather could have fought in his own weight class rather than Marquez. Who wouldn’t want to see Mayweather fight Paul Williams, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto or Andre Berto?

I could see those fights being pay-per-view bouts, especially Williams, Mosley and Cotto. But I can’t see paying to see Mayweather beat a hand picked opponent two divisions below him in weight. That’s not interesting to me and looks more like Mayweather of old, finding someone that he knows he can beat rather than fight an opponent that would test his skills.

Marquez will test Mayweather a little bit, but not to the extent that Cotto, Williams or Mosley would. Marquez has gone life and death with Juan Diaz, Manny Pacquiao and Joel Casamayor in his last three fights, and he hasn’t shown that he as enough left in the tank to beat a bigger, quicker and more skilled fighter like Mayweather. I see Mayweather as taking the easy path by fighting Marquez.

This is a fight that Mayweather wins in his sleep. Why he shouldn’t he? Mayweather picked a small enough guy to get the win. If I was a fighter, I’d do really well if I chose a fighter one or two divisions smaller than me to fight. Even if they did gain enough weight to get near my fighting weight, I’d still be the bigger fighter and I could throw them around like I’m dealing with a kid because I would have a big size advantage.
