The Curious Case of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

By Will Cruz: The self proclaimed “Cash Cow” has a very significant bout On September 19. The upcoming clash with Marquez is more significant for Floyd than most people think. It might be more significant than even Floyd realizes. Floyd Mayweather Jr, has undoubtedly been one of the sport’s biggest attractions in the last decade. However, some question if his pay-per-view success in recent years has been a true testament to his star power or a result of the pairing for those fights.

In his last two fights he faced off against Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya (the long time “Cash King”). Both fights created tremendous buzz and both resulted in amazing PPV numbers. Mayweather Jr, has taken all the credit for the PPV success of these two fights; but I strongly disagree.

mayweather46465780Several months ago, before Mayweather announced his comeback, many would have disagreed with me. But I get the feeling from the consensus of those I talk to, that I’m not so crazy now.

It’s no coincidence that with a month away from his great return to the ring, there has not been much buzz for his fight against Juan Marquez. In fact, there has been as much buzz about the fight airing on the same night as a UFC event. When the numbers come in for his fight with Marquez, I don’t believe they will be near what Floyd expects.

That will be a big blow to “Money May,” and will put things in perspective for him and his team. The “Cash Cow,” will realize he is now the “Cash Calf.” The question will be how Floyd reacts after that disappointment; will he step up and realize that he has hurt his own legacy by not fighting the best fighters, will he continue to make excuses and hand pick his opponents, or will he step up to the plate and save himself before he disappears into the sunset.

It’s sad to say with as much raw talent and skill that Floyd possesses, that his most exciting showdown recently has been against Brian Kenny of ESPN. Those were heated exchanges at times, and some might pay to see that rather than his fight against Marquez.

At the end of the day, Floyd fans will still buy his PPV fights. The problem is that he does not have as many fans nowadays as he did in the past. And with the potential fight of the year just two months away from his return, some might save their $49.95 for Cotto vs. Pacquiao.

So there is a lot riding on his fight with Marquez. So much hype has been made about a potential Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight, but if his fight with Marquez does poorly, or is a snooze fest, we might not even be talking about that fight. So, we wait and see what happens next month, then I guess we’ll have something to talk about. If someone watches the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight, let me know how it goes, otherwise, I’ll catch the replay on youtube.
