Matthew Hatton vs. Thaxton – Part 2

By Liam Santiago: I recently posted an article on the idea of this being a better choice of match making for the very limited fighter Matthew Hatton. As a boxing expert, I was not surprised with the criticism I received. Now, I will explain why you were wrong. You said Thaxton is a natural lightweight. Yes, he was, but he is now dedicated to the welterweight division. Personally, I am disgusted at the type of match making I witnessed when Hatton was lined up as the next contender for N’Dou’s world title and even as an opponent for Zab Judah.

Yes, as I have said, Thaxton is now a welterweight and so is Hatton. You all threw more daggers at me. ‘Thaxton is shot’. ‘He lost his last fight’. Yes, you are correct. He lost to a welterweight who beat another promising Brit in his previous fight, Nadeem Siddique, (21-0). Thaxton might be ‘shot’ or might not be I couldn’t care less. If Thaxton is shot then so is Hatton. Hatton has lost four times to journeymen with as many as 50 loses on their record. His biggest achievement came when he outpointed an old, tired Ben Tackie. Wow. World title contender? Yes, Thaxton lost his last fight, and that is why I have put him in the running for a fight with Hatton, because if he won, Hatton would get no where near the big punching Essex man.

thaxton42346As expected all Ricky Hatton fans come to the surface when I write about his younger brother, and I tell you, it’s the last time I do, but they don’t tend to look at the facts. Hatton has got himself in world title contention on the basis that his surname is Hatton. Please, do not tell me Hatton is simply acting as a journeyman for the fight. He only took this bout as his world title shot with Lovemore N’Dou fell through ; due to not agreeing terms (money). My article simply stated that I did not want to see this. I understand that boxing is about earning your way up and getting your lucky chance. But, this has not been earned. Does beating an old, tired Ben Tackie, who who past his best when Ricky fought him years ago, warrant a title shot, along with a string of loses. Every time out he proves his quality. No head movement, no footwork, walking on to shots, with his best quality being able to take them

Thaxton has been lined up to fight the undefeated, yet much much under rated, John Murray. The man who has built his career on Amir Khan’s name and a string of very average opponents. The man who has had 27 bouts and is still fighting British ranked seven fighters. I do not ever want to see him fight at world level and would never want to see him fight Amir Khan. I predict when he get’s past British level, he will fall like a hot spud.
